Why does the sound of rain make you sleepy?
Rain sounds are a lullaby
Rain sound is rhythmic and gentle and can feel like a soothing lullaby helping you fall asleep quickly.
Studies have shown that when listening to rain sounds your body will unconsciously relax and your brain starts to produce alpha waves, which can simulate the state of the brain when you sleep.
Gentle Rain sound is typically between 0 and 20 khz. This frequency is calming and relaxing and the constant rhythm of rainfall helps clear your mind of just focus on the sound of rain. Many people prefer listening to rain with no thunder as it can interrupt the rhythm and interrupt your peaceful state of mind.
The association of rain with shelter
Humans associate the sound of rain with being indoors, safe, and seeking shelter from a potential storm.
Being warm, comfortable and protected - there’s nothing quite like lying comfortably in your bed and listening to the rainstorm outside or the sound of rain falling gently against your bedroom window.
When you are inside and it is raining outside, it’s typically darker and therefore your brain starts to produce melatonin which is a seep related hormone. When it’s raining, dark clouds can block the sun and ambient light dims. When this happens, the secreted melatonin increases in the human brain making you feel tired and sleepy.
Interestingly your eyes also help create the sleep related protein when light dims and your environment becomes dark. This is why all of our videos on YouTube featuring the sound of rain include a dark black screen background to help you focus only on the sound of rain without any distractions to ease you into a comfortable and peaceful sleep.
